The regular deadline for SDFFF film submissions is coming up for our San Diego Filipino Film Festival this year. Regular deadline is on May 16, 2022. We accept film submissions exclusively via our FilmFreeway fest page.
We celebrated our inaugural SDFFF last year with the critically acclaimed film FANNY: THE RIGHT TO ROCK by Bobbi Jo Hart as our Opening Film at the newly transformed Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park and with our Closing Film The Fabulous Filipino Brothers by Dante Basco at the AMC Theaters in Otay Ranch Town Center. Award-winning film creatives including cinematographer Carlo Mendoza, writer/director Kayla Galang, actresses Maria Isabel Lopez, and Mara Lopez were among the few who graced the festival. The whole Basco family celebrated in-person with the audience for two nights of sold out screenings of Dante Basco’s feature debut The Fabulous Filipino Brothers.
Be part of our growing film movement that highlights and celebrates Filipino representation, culture, and unique perspectives through film. Save the dates on your calendar: SDFFF will be held from October 13th through 18th later this year during Filipino American History Month.

Perspective Film Series: Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo (Once a Moth)
Thank you to everyone who attended the virtual screening of Lupita Concio’s digitally restored and remastered Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo (Once a Moth) and accompanying Q&A last week, from June 23-June 25!
SDFC would especially like to extend our gratitude to the award-winning writer of the film, Marina Feleo Gonzalez, and Philippine cinema icon, Gloria Sevilla, for their time, reflection, and insight provided by each during their Q&A interviews. Marina Feleo Gonzalez stated in her interview with us that “a film is forever” — a description apt for Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo in 2021. For although the film was made in 1976, its courageous critique of US colonialism in the Philippines is a message which resonates far beyond the borders of the Philippines and to the present day.
This screening was in partnership with The Filipino Channel and ABS-CBN Film Restoration/Sagip Pelikula. Community Partner: County of San Diego Filipino-American Employees’ Association. We are deeply honored to have partnered with amazing organizations who are dedicated to bringing important stories to our community. Maraming salamat! 💛
We hope to see everyone at our future events! To remain up to date on all SDFC events and news, be sure to sign up for our SDFC E-Newsletter.

A Salute to an Icon
Cesar Hernando (1946-2019; Manila) —screenwriter, art teacher, graphic designer, production designer, director, overall creative collaborator and yes, photographer, too—has inhabited the movie set for close to five decades now. With his multifarious involvements in Philippine cinema, no one has captured the milieu quite like his photographs…Over the years, Hernando had amassed a treasure trove of images, that, when pieced together, offer rarely seen perspectives of Filipino moviemaking, as well as a history of Filipino cinema. He worked exclusively with the greats, which added even more importance to the pictures he took. Source: Luzviminda.ph
